Brian Wilson - Visions: His Complete Outside Productions (2-CD)

Compilation (single artist)

Well, I said last time that we were going to be kicking things off with some new releases we've been working on slowly over the past couple of months, and I can't really think of anyone better to begin with than our all-time hero.

Although a couple of imports released during the past two decades have attempted to consolidate some of Brian's outside stuff into a complete set, neither could be considered anything close to comprehensive. Therefore, Visions is the only compilation available that presents the complete picture of Brian as studio auteur and mogul.

From his nascent 1962 explorations into writing and recording with Gary Usher, to the resplendent tracks he produced during his final reunion with The Honeys during the late seventies, it's all presented here in chronological order for your listening pleasure. Visions offers fascinating insight into Brian's unheralded parallel career as an independent record producer, as it showcases alternate paths he may have traveled further were it not for his dedication to The Beach Boys.

As always, every effort has been put forth by us here at the Sphere, both in terms of sound quality and attention to detail. This one is special to us, and we want this to be one compilation one you'll return to again and again. Also includes a bonus folder with over 100 period photos, including all the official 45 labels and more.

Okay, 1, 2... testing and... here we go!

    1. No problem at all! Hopefully this is just the first of several offerings.

    2. I see a lot of characters and symbols after several song titles, but no real explanation to what they mean. Were those just self-notes, or is there a guide to the meaning I missed?

    1. Super glad you dig it! In fairness, I imagine licensing restrictions got in their way when it came to completeness. The sound was very good on that collection.

    2. Actually I take that back, guess I'm dumb. (lol). The Big Beat thing was a Euro copyright dodge and I think some of those sources came from old school collectors who on one or two tracks couldn't even match what I had in my archives.

That collection definitely holds up and I'm glad BRI released it, but the one I meant that had the great sound was the Ace compilation entitled "Pet Projects"-- great collection, but likely limited due to licensing BS.

  7. Great stuff! I bought the "Pet Projects" compilation 10 years ago which whetted my appetite for more. Thanks for the putting in the blood, sweat and tears into this work which comprehensively trounces that comp. I especially appreciate the care and attention that has gone into the production (love the label scans). Lots of tunes I hadn’t heard before which brilliantly display the breadth of Brian's interests and abilities. The work-rate of the man still amazes after all these years, Thanks again!

    1. Thanks, CGM. I agree, you really get a different perspective on Brian upon hearing all this non-Beach Boys stuff. He was all over the map! A true visionary; hence the title.

  8. Why the edited version of Malibu Sunset? You do know there is a longer version on you tube, don't you?

    1. Thanks for taking the time to poke holes in my compilation. No I generally don't spend all day trolling YouTube, but a longer running time on that song would push the disc over the 80 minute mark anyway; so I guess people will have to track that one down on their own.

    2. Here's the longer "Malibu Sunset"; it still seems to cut off a bit of the intro, but you can hear the whole song this way.

    3. I wasn't trying to poke holes, I just thought a rare track like Malibu Sunset should be heard. Caroline, no - Getting Hungry - and the 2 Jasper D. tracks could be edited to make room for a well known rarity.

    1. Hey Long Island Steve, I can copy and paste the track list here if that helps you. I used to do tray art with all the tracks and whatnot, but in this era of downloads I didn't think anyone would want it. If you'd like a track list, I can help you out.

  11. This is awesome. "lynda jardine.jpg" in Misc Art looks suspiciously like actress Illeana Douglas. Messing with us?

Thanks for putting this together and sharing.
